Alan Retro cut his musical teeth fronting bands at clubs such as Cantone’s and The Rat during the heady Punk Rock/New Wave days in Boston. A couple of bands of note from that era that Alan was in were Junk Mail and Condo Pygmies. Two of Retro’s favorite musical memories are performing on Venezuelan television, and opening for the Twist craze king Chubby Checker at the Paradise Theater.
Alan cites many influences, but says that Elvis Presley was his first and most lasting. Now Alan is rocking in Retro Polatin, a fun dance band started by Alan and lead guitarist David Lee Polatin. Alan Retro is a high energy entertainer who can cover a wide range of musical styles from rockabilly to swing to jump blues to 50s and 60s dance music. Alan delivers it all with passion and conviction. So check out Alan Retro in RetroPolatin, and keep on dancin’.
David Lee started playing the guitar when he was seven years old. The first song he played was "Love Me Tender." He soon quit the guitar when he realized that he could't comb his crewcut into a ducktail.
Years later, he started playing again and listening to Chuck Berry, Louis Jordan, Eddie Cochran and Wanda Jackson. He formed a family band, "Dotsie and the Cool Cats" with his daughter and son. They played in local talent shows and a "Live at the Apollo" Night at the Strand Theatre in Boston to an audience of nine hundred.
Next, he joined the Larry Lee Lewis Band, a rockabilly group. The band played great olds songs, with comedy between the sets.
David Lee enjoys playing vintage rock and roll and says, "The great thing about this music is that it seems to transcend age, musical taste, and all that other stuff. We're finding that young people enjoy our shows just as much as the folks who were there dancing at the birth of Rock and Roll."
As with many others, Kang was influenced by the arrival of the Beatles, and bought his first guitar in 1964 at age 11. When assigned with the job of bass guitarist in a band in 1968, he realized he'd found the role and voice he truly loved, and a devoted "bottom feeder" was born.
Many, many bands, playing situations and gigs (too many to list... honestly) have followed over the past 45 years-- from the start in New Jersey, to Connecticut and then much of New England, following his move to Boston in 1975. Original, Cover, R+R, R+B, Blues, Jazz, Country, Americana, Folk, Bluegrass...Kang's experience has run the gamut of music, and he loves to play it all! Along with playing in RetroPolitan, he's the House Bassist at some area Open Mics, and also fills the bass chair in a number of other musical aggregations.
John has been on the New England music scene since the seventies. He has played all over New England in such bands as Fingers, Matrix, Fantasy, The Velours, George Leh and the Rockin' Shoes, and Inside Job. John listens to all types of music and it shows in his versatility.
